The Red Wolf Inn

Every year we celebrate Canada’s Birthday on July 1, in Houston, British Columbia. This year (2015) it was Canada’s 148th Birthday and I went to the Jamie Baxter Park where I could watch, and film the celebrations.

I wandered around chatting with folks who were attending, and taking pictures of each of the events.

I came across some folks who who were having a lot of fun, and battling it out in full dress from the Medieval period. One fellow by the name of Troy Reitsma looked awesome and was having sword fights on the lawn with the kids and adults. It was so much fun to watch.

What I did not know was, there is a place between Houston and Smithers British Columbia called The Red Wolf Inn. The proprietors of the Inn are his Lordship Wlfryd of Leedes and her Ladyship Rhiannon of Shrewsbury.

World’s Largest Fly Fishing Rod Houston British Columbia (Photos)

200 Pound Steelhead ?

At six times the length of an average fly fishing rod, the World's Largest Fly Rod could theoretically catch a "chromer" that big.

It would require more than a dozen fisherman working in unison to maneuver the 800 pound, and a river 15 boxcars wide to cast upon.

And, of course, you would need a 200 pound "Steely".

Though local catches run in the 8 - 10 pound range, the occasional enthusiast has been overheard describing fish big enough to snap this rod's 300 pound test tip. But, for one reason or another, these monsters are always "the ones that got away".

Over 270 hours of donated labour and 470 hours of donated equipment and shop time went into the construction of the World's Largest Fly Rod.

Originally the idea of local resident and avid fly fisherman, Warner Jarvis, the project eventually enlisted the help of dozens of Houston residents and 41 local companies.

Most of the travelers who stop and stay, or are passing through head over to the giant Fly Rod to have their pictures taken with it.

Deer Visit Our Back Yard Throughout Winter In Houston British Columbia (Photos)

In winter time we usually feed the birds, we hang up a few bird feeders and our feathered friends are in and out of them all day long picking up seed.

Well one day we looked out and saw a Deer feeding on the seed. His nose was in the snow, so I would imagine he was finding some seed.

In Houston the Deer do wander through town.

Below Photos: We caught this guy licking up the bird feed, once he was done, off he went.

Beautiful Sunset At Kamloops Lake British Columbia (Gorgeous Photo)

Information Source From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Kamloops Lake in British Columbia, Canada is situated on the Thompson River just west of Kamloops. The lake is 1.6 km wide, 29 km long, and up to 152 m deep. The community of Savona is located at the west end of the lake on the Thompson River. The city of Kamloops is located a few miles east of the head of the lake, at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers.

The lake is bounded on all sides by steep embankments, with level areas found only near creek deltas and around the inlet and outlet.

The surrounding land is mostly uninhabited. It is classified as dry belt interior grasslands, composed of bunchgrass and sagebrush with pockets of Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine and spruce.

Kamloops Lake is a widening and deepening of the Thompson River, which enters at the east end and exits at the west end.

The limnology of the lake is controlled by the Thompson River, which has large fluctuations in annual flow, with over 60% occurring in the early summer during freshet (May to July). Lake levels rise naturally as much as 30 feet (9.1 m) from high season in June compared to low season.

Conversely, beach areas expand by as much as 200 feet (61 m) in the summer as lake levels recede after freshet.

Information Source, The District of Houston, B.C.  - A link about schools and photos can be found by visiting the website at: http://houston.ca/siteengine/activepage.asp?PageID=28

The Log Schoolhouse

The first little log school was built as a community effort in Houston in 1916. Harry Davis, an early resident and school trustee of this area, donated several acres of land for a school, located approximately where the community hall is situated in 1998.

George Dungate and Andrew Martinson were among those who cut logs and dovetailed them by hand and put up the building.

The school housed a wood heater, teacher's desk, several rows of students’ desks, a large book cupboard, and a coat rack.

Mountains Seen From The Coquihalla Summit And Highway British Columbia

Highway 5 is a 524 km (326 mi) north-south route in southern British Columbia, Canada. Highway 5 connects the southern Trans-Canada route (Highway 1) with the northern Yellowhead route (Highway 16), providing the shortest land connection between Vancouver and Edmonton.

A portion of Highway 5 south of Kamloops is also known as the Coquihalla Highway, the northern portion is known as the Southern Yellowhead Highway.

The Coquihalla section was a toll road until 2008.

Below Photos: I have added 5 pictures when we were traveling down to my Dad's 90th Birthday in Langley, B.C.. There was my wife, my daughter, son-in-law and my two wonderful grandchildren.

I certainly will take this route again, but this time making lots of stops to take a bunch of photos. The Coquihalla Highway scenery is some of the most beautiful I have seen in the province.

Below Photo: In this picture you can see one of the roadside washrooms, but with a lot of snow piled on top of the roof.

Below Photo: Late the next day after my Dad’s Birthday, we started our drive back to my Daughters home in Kamloops. The daylight was fading, but I tried to take a photo of the mountains, and the moon was in the shot.

Gastown Steam Clock Vancouver British Columbia (Photo/Video)

When I was in Vancouver, a friend and I looked around taking in the sights of the city. We stopped by the Gastown Steam Clock and I took some pictures and a video clip. Below are the picture and clip.

Information Source Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 to solve the issue of a steam vent in a popular sidewalk for the renovated Gastown district of Vancouver, 49°17′04″N 123°06′32″W.

Although the clock is now owned by the City of Vancouver, funding for the project, over $C58,000, was provided by contributions from local merchants, property owners, and private donors.

Incorporating a steam engine and electric motors, the clock displays the time on four faces and announces the quarter hours with a whistle chime that plays the Westminster Quarters.

The clock is featured on the cover for the 2011 Nickelback album Here and Now.

Below Photo: Also on our tours around the city, we came across a street performer who was awesome. For some reason, I named him the Goat Dude, but the fellow did put on a great show for all.

It was time for a holiday, so my wife and I packed the Jeep and headed off to visit my son in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island here in British Columbia.

I took a number of pictures from the Ferry and have them posted below.

You can visit the British Columbia Ferries website to make your reservation.
